Dr. Jeremy I. Borjon is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Integrative Program in Developmental, Cognitive, & Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Houston. As Director of the Developing Systems Laboratory, Dr. Borjon’s research is aimed at understanding the processes supporting the emergence of language in infants. Because the mastery of language requires both its production and perception, he focuses on vocal production and visual attention. These two processes are intimately related to the activity of the autonomic nervous system, an important but under-studied drive of cognition and behavior. By leveraging wireless sensors, computer vision, machine learning, and closed-loop experimental setups I am able to gain a systems level perspective of both the infant and their caregiver in naturalistic environments. This research program makes fundamental contributions to the basic science of understanding developmental processes in humans and provides new translational paths to determining targets of intervention for infants at-risk of language delay, communication and speech disorders, as well as attention disorders.
